Property taxes due Feb. 1By SUE WATSON
Marshall County Tax Collector Betty Byrd reminds property owners that 2007 taxes are due by Friday, Feb. 1, 2008.
Customers may pay their taxes in person at the main office in Holly Springs, at the Byhalia Substation or by mail, Byrd said.
Although the tax collector’s office at the Byhalia Substation is now open full-time, Byrd said many people still do not know they can get full service at the substation located at 1311 Highway 309 North and Fields Road.
Full service includes the following transactions – payment of property taxes, purchase of vehicle tags or registration stickers, boat registration, privilege and business licenses, vehicle titles, payment of sales taxes on vehicles, purchase of vanity and specialty license plates, and handicap placards.
The tax collector’s office accepts payment by cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover cards.
“We ask those making payment by mail to include their tax card for convenience,” Byrd said. “Receipts will arrive back in the customer’s mail within several days after payment is received at the tax collector’s office.”
To pay by mail, send payment and tax stub to Betty Byrd, tax collector, P.O. Box 40, Holly Springs, MS 38635.
Customers can avoid interest charges, if they pay their taxes by February 1, after which interest accrues on unpaid taxes at the rate of 1 percent per month, Byrd said.
Customers who have not paid their property taxes by the last Monday in August will have accrued 7 percent interest on delinquent taxes, she said.
Failure to pay property taxes before Friday, August 22, will put the taxes up for auction at the land tax sale on Monday, August 25, Byrd said.
Property taxes sold at auction can be redeemed by the owner after August 22 at the chancery clerk’s office at the Holly Springs courthouse. Interest charges and other charges will be applied in addition to the amount of tax owed.
