Mark February 1 on
the calendar. That’s when the H.W. Byers Lady Lions will host the
Belmont Lady Cardinals with the top division seed on the line. “That will be a marquee game,”
said Jason Thompson, head coach of the Lady Lions. His team improved to 4-0 in the
district with a huge, come-from-behind 59-53 victory Friday night at
New Site. “It
was an amazing win,” coach Jason Thompson said. “Facing New Site at New
Site is always tough. Our goal is to win the division.” He
said Ciara Seldon, who led the Lady Lions with 17 points, hit clutch
baskets and came up with key steals. Simone Ryan added 11 points, while
Rachel Jones and Kourtney Coleman scored 10 each. Byers improved to
19-3 overall. “Kourtney came off the bench and
played great,” he said. “She was four of six from the field and had six
rebounds.” She produced a big three-point
play that gave the Lady Lions the lead for good in the fourth quarter,
Coach Thompson said. Byers trailed 26-19 at the half. The Byers boys grabbed a big road
win, too, at New Site. Justin Owens’ 31 points led the way in the 75-61
victory. Coach Sylvester Kilgore’s squad
improved to 3-1 in the division and 7-13 overall. Marvin Rayford gunned in 24
points. Jarvis Ware contributed 10. The Lions built a commanding
30-16 halftime advantage. H.W. Byers vs. East Union The Byers basketball teams had no
trouble recording wins Tuesday night, Jan. 8, at East Union. The Lady Lions led 30-14 at the
half and then outscored East Union 25-2 in the third on their way to
the 66-28 win. Hitting in double digits were
Ryan with 24, Seldon with 19 and Marian Parker with 10. Four H.W. Byers boys scored in
double figures as the Lions dominated East Union 75-53. They outscored the home team 29-8
in the second quarter to put the victory on ice. Top point producers were Rayford
with 22, Demarious Scott with 14, Fred Jones with 12 and Owens with 10. The
Lions and Lady Lions were scheduled to host Marshall County rival
Byhalia on Tuesday of this week. They continue the intracounty battles
Friday evening with a trip to Holly Springs. Byers squads host
Middleton, Tenn., Saturday evening and then travel to Independence next
Tuesday, Jan. 22.
