Scholarship established in honor of Childress
The Melvin E. “Dooney” Childress Endowed Scholarship was recently announced by the Northwest Community College Foundation. The scholarship was established by the Northcentral Electric Power Association in appreciation for his 46 years of dedicated service to Northcentral.
Childress began his career at Northcentral on Dec. 1, 1961, on a three-man construction crew about a year after the electric power cooperative moved from Coldwater to Byhalia. He and his wife, Dot Childress of Byhalia, whose career at Northcentral began 10 months prior to his, were married the day after he began work. Starting as a groundman, “Dooney,” as he was affectionately called, moved up through the levels to lineman, line foreman of a construction crew, and then the construction superintendent, where he oversaw all phases of overhead and underground line construction. In 1998, he was named director of contract services where he served until his retirement in July of 2007.
During the ice storm of 1994, Childress worked tirelessly to restore power to the members of Northcentral EPA. During the cleanup and restoration, he was seriously injured by a fallen tree, an injury that required over two months of rehabilitation.
“Dooney Childress made a difference in every life he touched at Northcentral, both on the job and off,” said Northcentral general manager Kevin Doddridge. “He trained crew members in all aspects of safely building electric lines. He was an integral part of Northcentral. He had a hand in just about all of Northcentral’s 1,242 miles of electric line.”
Off the job, he was a hunter, fisherman, cook, devoted Mason, and avid Ole Miss fan. He and his wife, Dot, had two children, Renea Childress Reed and Mike Childress, now deceased, and two grandchildren.

"Face to Face With Memories of 50 Years Past"
Through the tireless efforts of Danny Colston, the Holly Springs High School Class of 1958 celebrated their 50th class reunion on June 21, 2008. The event was held at Oak Palace with a catered dinner.
The class members who were able to attend remembered the ones who were lost to death during the past 50 years and the ones who could not come for various other reasons.
"There was never a greater group of individuals to graduate from Holly Springs High School. We were such a happy and close group and enjoyed so much going to school together for 12 years. Although some of us have seen each other during the time that has passed, the reunion brought some of us together again for the first time since graduation day. What a treasure!" said Nettie (Smith) Dunaway. Yearbooks were passed around for "new" signatures and acknowledging the blessing of "old" signatures and comments from 50 years past. Nettie also said that all class members in attendance agreed to share the pictures taken during the celebration, along with addresses, so everyone can keep in touch for many years to come. To those not there, "We missed you but you were in our thoughts!" Thanks, again, Danny!
Class members in attendance were: Dennis Ash and wife Judy; Connie Boatwright Johnson and husband Freddie; Connie Conrad Hensley; Margaret Brown Ashcraft and husband Walter; Raymond (Danny) Colston; Frances Doxey Winter and husband Rusty; Annette Edwards Walker; Billy Fant and wife Janie; Bobby Garner; Fred Johnson and wife Joan; Larry Jones and wife Ann; David Robinson and wife Ginger; Dottie Teasler Merritt; Hazel Smith Johnson and husband Cecil; Nettie Smith Dunaway; Mitchell Tomlinson; Juanita Young Thomas and husband Charles.
This was the first-ever reunion for the class. A good time was had by all, visiting and taking pictures.
