Pitching for Byhalia and Marshall Academy, respectively, on Monday of last week are Andrew Brown (above) and Joey Brock (right). |
Joey Brock struck out 10 in five innings June 16 as host Marshall Academy beat Byhalia in summer baseball action. MA won the rain-shortened contest 10-1. “After
the first inning, Joey settled in and commanded the strike zone,” coach
Johnny Ray said. “He pitched with a lot of confidence after he worked
out of trouble in the first inning.” The Indians loaded the bases in the first but scored just one run. | | Byhalia base runner The Indians’ Sean Parent gets a lead off third as coach Mike Turner looks on. | Catching pop-up First baseman Jake Omedeo makes the catch for MA. Brock allowed only three hits, walked two and hit a batter as he improved his summer pitching mark to 2-0. The
Patriots had 12 hits. All nine starters had at least one hit. Caleb
Byrd was two for two with two runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch.
Hunter Bolden was two for three with a double and two runs-batted-in.
Tyler Childers was two for three with an RBI and two runs scored. “As
a team we’re swinging the bats well,” Ray said. “Every hitter in the
lineup is contributing. The way we are swinging it now, the opposing
pitchers can’t rest at any spot in the batting order.” Bubba Brown, Byhalia’s head coach, missed the game due to a death in the family. He said his Indians are “extremely young” and getting some valuable experience this summer. “The summer is about the young guys – trying to get them worked in,” Coach Brown said. The
Byhalia summer squad includes just four Indians with substantial
playing time from the spring – Andrew Brown, Marcus Franks, Pat Malone
and Tavaris Neal. He’s missing three due to other summer activities and
jobs. MA Tournament Marshall Academy will host a tournament this week, and the Byhalia Indians will be one of the participants. The schedule follows. June 26 – 3 p.m., Oxford vs. Center Hill; 5:30 p.m., Byhalia vs. Oxford; 8 p.m., Byhalia vs. Marshall Academy. June
