Byers girls go 3-0 in Alabama
By BARRY BURLESON
The defending Class 2A state champions in Mississippi excelled in the neighboring state of Alabama on Tuesday of last week.
The H.W. Byers Lady Lions went 3-0 in team camp held at Birmingham-Southern College – beating bigger schools Greene County, Ala., Shades Valley, Ala., and Walker, La.
“We played some very stiff competition, and we played good,” said Jason Thompson, head coach of the Lady Lions. “The other teams there were impressed with our play.”
Thompson said he was short-handed. Only 10 players attended, and the three games were almost back-to-back.
“We got tired, but we played hard,” he said. “It was a very good experience for our kids.”
Standout point guard Rachel Jones was her usual self.
“She played well,” Thompson said.
He said he also got “good solid play” from several young players moving up to the varsity – like Alexis Hardaway, Kyra Gulledge and Dominique Rubbin.
“We were blessed to have this opportunity (to go to Birmingham and play),” Thompson said. “And it was a chance to play some of the younger ones since some of the experienced ones could not attend. It worked out well for us.”
