Cardinals fall to Okolona
By BARRY BURLESON
A huge challenge faced the Potts Camp Cardinals as they tipped off the post-holiday portion of their basketball schedule.
Their opponent was Okolona and one of the state’s best players, Jeremy Newsome.
Coach Brian Smith’s Cardinals had an early 10-8 lead but it was pretty much downhill from there as they fell 75-40 Saturday in the Premiere Printing Classic at North Pontotoc.
“They just out-manned us,” Smith said about the Chieftains. “They had a big advantage size-wise.”
Chris Sims had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Teammate Lavonte Richmond contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Coach Smith said Sims “played well” versus Newsome, as did Richmond, a freshmen, against a taller Willie Grady, a senior.
Top scorers for Okolona were David Gardner with 21, Newsome with 18 and Deon Shotwell with 11.
“We’re rebuilding, and it’s tough,” Smith said about his young team. “But we’re going to keep working and hope we get some chemistry going. We want to find the right pieces to the puzzle and make a run.”
The Cardinals (9-10) and the Lady Cardinals (10-8) were scheduled to host Byhalia on Tuesday of this week. That was the Lady Cards’ first game after the holiday recess.
Potts Camp teams then travel to Strayhorn Friday night.
