Alliance, Williams Clinic sponsor eighth health fair
The eighth annual Eddie L. Smith Community Health Fair is set for next week. Activities
kick off Tuesday, May 13, with a men’s health forum and dinner at 6
p.m. at Alliance HealthCare System Hospital, 1430 Hwy. 4 East in Holly
Springs. On Wednesday, May 14, there will be a women’s luncheon at 12 noon at the hospital. The
health fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at
the Holly Springs Multi-Purpose Building, 235 North Memphis Street.
There will be blood pressure checks, height, weight and vision

provided by Alliance HealthCare System and Williams Medical Clinic.
County unemployment 7.6; state rate same as February
For
the month of March 2008, Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate remained steady at 5.9 percent, which was identical
to the rate reported for February, the Mississippi Department of
Employment Security (MDES) announced last week. Local conditions varied considerably across the state with most counties showing very little change from February to March. Twenty-four
counties’ unemployment rates were lower than or equal to the state’s
rate of 5.9 percent. Only five counties reported double-digit
unemployment rates for March. The lowest
unemployment rate for the month of March 2008 was Rankin County at 3.9,
followed by Lamar County at 4.2 and Scott County at 4.4. Jefferson
County had the highest at 11.9, followed by Clay at 10.9. Marshall County’s unemployment rate for March was 7.6 percent. Benton County’s was 9.1.
Byhalia policemen respond to 38 calls, make arrests
The Byhalia Police Department responded to 38 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – eight alarm calls, one
burglary, three disturbances, three escorts, three animal-related
calls, one assist, seven medical assists, one fire and 11 miscellaneous
calls. Byhalia police officers also made arrests on the following charges: • Warrant, Byhalia, failure to appear. • Warrant, Byhalia, failure to appear. • Warrant, Olive Branch. • Warrant, Byhalia, grand larceny. • Driving while license suspended, petit larceny, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. • Disturbing the peace. • Warrant, Byhalia, failure to appear, improper equipment.
