Southern Heritage Classic slated for second Saturday 2008-2015
Fred Jones Jr., founder of the Southern Heritage Classic football game, announced recently that the game will take place on the second Saturday of September for the next eight consecutive years.
The second Saturday in September has been designated as “Classic Saturday.” Jones said this will be convenient for fans, sponsors and the participating schools.
“Many families plan their annual vacations and reunions around the Southern Heritage Classic football game and other events attending the weekend,” he said. “Knowing that the game will be held on the second Saturday of September for at least the next eight years will definitely make it easier for them to plan ahead.”
The dates for the years 2008 through 2015 are:
• Sept. 13, 2008, Sept. 12, 2009, Sept. 11, 2010, Sept. 10, 2011, Sept. 8, 2012, Sept 14, 2013, Sept. 13, 2014, Sept. 10, 2011, Sept 12, 2015.
This year will be the 19th offering of the event which has evolved into one of the most well-attended social outings in the Bluff City area. It attracts thousands who stay and enjoy the many other programs accompanying the Classic.
The Classic which is held at the Liberty Bowl is presented by FedEx. The Classic will donate $285,000 to each participating school to fund educational activities.
The Southern Heritage Classic was founded by Fred Jones Jr., also the founder and CEO of Summitt Management Corp.
Jones is a veteran of the national entertainment industry and is a limited partner/minor owner of the NBA franchise, the Memphis Grizzlies.
