Close to Nowhere
During Pilgrimage this week I will not be one of the “Southern belles” floating around town in a hoop skirt. Unfortunately...
I often wonder what it would have been like to have lived back in those days -- before the Civil War obviously.
I can just see myself growing and tending a garden and, mostly, sitting outside in my beautiful garden quilting.
Ah, it would be wonderful. The “major” quilt I’m working on now is called “Dear Hannah.” The blocks and quilt were designed by a lady named Brenda Papadakis, in the style of her first quilt Dear Jane. Dear Jane and Dear Hannah are both modernized renditions of Civil War patterns. Both have small blocks (finished at 4.5 inches) and some of those blocks have between 80-100 teeny-tiny pieces.
I see it now -- me sitting in my garden bower, cursing mightily as the wind blows those small scraps of fabric hither and yon!
Then, I think about cooking in that era. Maybe a big iron pot over a fire? Yea, right. I burn myself terribly now with an electric stove and oven. What would I have done with an actual fire? Wonder if they had burn centers back then?
Thinking about food made me wonder about recipes. So, I Googled Civil War recipes and found a bunch that re-enactors use “in the field” today.
I’m sure I would love this!
Remember, it’s not what they say, it’s their reaction to a small taste. Watch the eyes. However, under no circumstances, let them have more. Pronounce it “not quite ready.” This gives them time to tell others about how good it is, thereby guaranteeing you will have nothing left when you are finished serving.
