Nutt to headline Northwest banquet By LAJUAN TALLO
New University of Mississippi head football coach Houston Nutt will be the featured speaker at the Northwest Community College Sports Hall of Fame banquet on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. The event, which is sponsored by the Northwest Alumni Association, will be held at the David M. Haraway Conference Center on the Senatobia campus. This year six inductees will be honored. They are Russell Evans of Memphis, Bryant Mix of Water Valley, Marcus Hicks of Ridgeland, Bill Selby of Southaven, LaConger Cohran Shelton of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, and Bryce McCullough, who will be honored posthumously. Nutt, who was named the 36th head coach of the Ole Miss program in December, has an overall coaching record of 111-70. He was head coach at the University of Arkansas from 1998-2007. During that time he guided the Razorbacks to Southeastern Conference (SEC) Western Division titles in 1998, 2002, and 2006, with championship game appearances in the last two. Under his leadership, Arkansas appeared in eight bowl games in 10 years, which is the most in the SEC Western Division during that span. He ranks second all-time in Arkansas history in coaching wins and bowl appearances. He began his coaching experience as an assistant in 1981 at Oklahoma State University. He has also held assistant coaching positions at Arkansas and Arkansas State. Before coaching at Arkansas, he was head coach at Murray State and Boise State Universities. He was named the SEC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2006. Nutt graduated from Central High School in Little Rock, and received a bachelor of arts in physical education from Oklahoma State in 1981. He played quarterback at Arkansas during the 1976-1977 seasons and at Oklahoma State during the 1979-1980 seasons. He is married to the former Diana Thomas. They are the parents of twin daughters Hailey and Hanna, daughter Haven and son Houston III. Tickets for the event are $20 and should be purchased by May 8. They are available from any Alumni Association representative, and on all Northwest campuses. For more information, contact Dolores Wooten at 662-560-1105 or email dbwooten@northwestms.edu. |
