The
Byers Lady Lions, crowned thrice for the just finished season,
had another day of recognition on March 29 at their school. The
festive day was capped with a pep rally in the Lions’ den, the place
where the state champs pleased their fans for the most part of the
season. Prior to the pep rally there was the
super impressive “Walk of Fame.” The players were paraded down the
corridors of the elementary and middle schools where their younger fans
were aligned to pay homage. The individual classrooms had picked names
(by lottery), of all the players and honored them with door decorations
and gifts. | Trophies galore
On
display are the Lady Lions’ tournament trophies from 2007-08, including
the gold ball signifying the Class 2A state championship, far right. |
The entourage, joined by coaches Jason
Thompson and Sylvester Kilgore, beamed at the chanting of the players’
names and slapped high fives with hundreds of students. The reigning
and cacophonous chant was “Rachel, Rachel, Rachel.” Rachel Jones, the
super-aggressive guard of the Lady Lions, had been the main cog in the
Byers’ winning machine. Head coach Jason
Thompson had been chosen “Coach of the Year” and Jones, Simone Ryan and
Ciarra Seldon were selected to the All Region 1-2A. Jones was selected
to the First Team All Area. The team, also
holding regional and north half crowns, had been feted to a dinner at
the Rendezvous, compliments of the manager. They were also given a
luncheon at the school cafeteria on Friday. The
superintendent and assistant, Don Randolph and R.C. Anderson, joined
the luncheon and the pep rally and lauded the coaches and players for
their many and stellar accomplishments for the season.
