The teams from Marshall picked up three wins on day two of the Northwest Classic shootout. The
Lady Hawks beat Craigmont High (Memphis) girls in a squeaker, winning
73-70. The Holly High Hawks met the Lions of H.W. Byers and the Hawks
won out 70-53. Then in game five on Friday, the
Class 2A Lady Lions drew the Class 5A Lady Tigers of South Panola. The
Lady Tigers put their 11-2 record on the floor against the unbeaten
(15-0) skein of the Lady Lions. | | Hawk vs. Eagle Shermaine Jones of Holly High gets his shot off over a Horn Lake Eagle. | Two points Marian Parker (32) of Byers scores two of her 12 versus North Panola. |
The Lady Lions
were not handing out favors. They took it to the Lady Tigers almost
immediately, going out to a 15-10 first quarter. The
Lady Tigers were having tons of trouble with this 2A unbeaten. They
tried hard to counter the three-prong attack by Simone Ryan, Amanda
Jones and Rachel Jones. The Lady Lions were 10 points ahead at the
half, 36-26. The Lady Tigers, sensing doom,
became more methodical in the third – selecting paths and passes. They
were also doing a better job of protecting the ball. Their control
brought the score down to 45-41 at the end of three. Byers
had a seven-point lead but saw it cut to two by some adroit shooting
from South Panola Neither team was lacking in hustle in the fourth. It
was turning into a battle royal the last two minutes. But
the Lady Tigers had to resort to fouling and they sent Rachel Jones to
the charity stripe too often. The Lady Lions went on to remain unbeaten
with a score of 60-53. Leading H.W. Byers to victory were Amanda Jones with 18 points, Rachel Jones with 16 and Ryan with 11.
