Potts Camp teams earn north berths
By BARRY BURLESON
It was do-or-die for Potts Camp teams in their opening games of the Region 1-2A Tournament at Belmont.
Wins would push them into the semi-finals and guarantee them a berth in next week’s North State play.
And both the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals came through in the clutch.
Four Potts Camp starters scored in double figures as the Cardinals routed New Site 89-53 Monday, Feb. 12.
Jacobye Davis led the way with 20, followed by Justin Smith and Josh Martin with 19 each and Shawn Collins with 17.
“Those four played extremely well,” said head coach Brian Smith.
“It was a big one - our 20th win and it assured us of getting out of district.”
The Potts Camp boys advanced to face Ashland in the semi-finals on Thursday night.
The Cardinals, thanks in large part to the success of their full court pressure, outscored New Site 30-16 in the third quarter to tuck the victory away.
The Lady Cardinals also placed four players in double digits as they knocked off Baldwyn 75-66 on Tuesday evening, Feb. 13.
Kenyotta Jenkins was the top gun with 25. She was followed by Samantha Nance with 15 and Shanekqua Johnson and Jasmine Harmon with 13 each.
“It was a tough game,” coach Kevin Harris. “Both teams had a strong desire to win.
“When they made runs, we answered. I’m proud of that.
“It was high intensity – win or go home. My kids put all they had into it and came out on top.”
The win also avenged a regular season loss to the Lady Bearcats.
The Potts Camp girls, advancing to meet Marshall County rival H.W. Byers in the semi-finals on Thursday, enjoyed a 21-10 run in the third quarter to go up 35-27 at the half.
