Lady Lions advance in north half tournament

Only one Marshall County team survived first round action Monday night in Mississippi High School Activities Association north half basketball competition.
The H.W. Byers Lady Lions, playing at home, routed Leland 68-37.
Coach Jason Thompson’s team, which improved to 23-9 on the season, advances to the Class 2A North Tournament’s final eight. The Lady Lions will face Ruleville Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at Coahoma County High School.
Other games will be Belmont versus Shaw at 4 p.m., Simmons versus Coldwater at 5:30 p.m. and Coahoma County vs. J.Z. George at 8:30 p.m.
With a win Thursday, Byers will face the Coahoma County-J.Z. George winner Friday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the semi-finals. The consolation and championship contests are set for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24.
The top three teams from the north advance to the Class 2A State Basketball Tournament at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, February 26-March 10.
Three other county teams were eliminated from postseason play Monday night – the Potts Camp Lady Cardinals losing at Simmons, 43-40; the Holly Springs Lady Hawks falling at South Pontotoc, 62-44; and the Byhalia Lady Indians coming up short at Aberdeen, 73-63.
