Byers splits with ’Cats; teams top seeds in district By BARRY BURLESON The H.W. Byers basketball teams wrapped up regular season play Friday night with a split at Independence. Ciara Seldon and Amanda Jones combined for 32 points in the Lady Lions’ 57-47 win. Seldon scored 18 and Jones 14. Byers led 17-16 after one quarter, 32-28 at the half and 42-35 at the end of three periods. The Lady Lions finished the regular season at 21-8. They enter this week’s Region 1-2A Tournament at Belmont as the number one seed. They play the Baldwyn-Potts Camp winner Thursday at 7 p.m. in the semi-finals. With a win, the Byers girls advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m. With a loss, they will played in the consolation contest Friday at 4 p.m. The top four teams advance to North State next week. The H.W. Byers boys put together a strong third-quarter rally at Independence but couldn’t hang on. They lost 79-66. The Lions trailed 44-30 at the half. They then outscored the Wildcats 25-10 in the third to take a 55-54 lead. But Independence dominated the fourth, 26-11, to get the 13-point victory. Three Lions hit for double digits - Darius Wells with 18, Tristan Kizer with 14 and Nicholas Tate with 12. The Lions completed the regular season with a record of 16-11. They go to this week’s Region 1-2A Tournament at Belmont as the top seed. They play the Belmont-Baldwyn winner Thursday at 8:30 p.m. With a win, they play Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the finals. With a loss, they play Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation game. The top four teams move on to the North State Tournament the following week. Report News:
