Byers sweeps Southaven By BARRY BURLESON H.W. Byers basketball teams went into neighboring DeSoto County Saturday and left with two victories over Class 5A Southaven. It took one overtime for the 2A Lady Lions to knock off Southaven 48-47. Coach Jason Thompson’s team led 16-14 at the half. Southaven outscored the Lady Lions 28-26 in the second half to knot the score at 42 and sent it to the extra period. Three Byers girls led a balanced scoring attack – Ciara Seldon with 15, Simone Ryan with 12 and Amanda Jones with 11. The Lady Lions, fresh off a huge win the night before over Belmont to finish unbeaten in the district, improved to 19-8 on the season. Coach Sylvester Kilgore’s Lions turned it up a notch in the second half and rolled to an 86-61 win over Southaven. The game was tied at 32 at the half. Byers then outscored Southaven 24-15 in the third quarter and 29-14 in the fourth to ease to the victory. The Lions, too, featured balanced scoring. Five players scored in double digits – Frederick Jones and Justin Owens with 18 each, Darrius Wells with 15, Nicholas Tate with 14 and Tristan Kizer with 12. The Lions, who also beat Belmont the night before to finish perfect in district play, improved to 16-9 on the season. Schedule H.W. Byers teams hosted Holly Springs Tuesday. They visit Independence Friday to conclude the regular season. The Division 1-2A Tournament will be played next week, February 12-16, at Belmont High School. Both the Lady Lions and Lions, the top seeds, receive opening round byes and will advance to play on Thursday night, Feb. 15. Report News:
