Lady Lions 13-0 By BARRY BURLESON Editor The H.W. Byers Lady Lions rode a strong first quarter to victory Friday night at Tunica. “We
got off to a good start, which is something we have not done before at
Tunica,” coach Jason Thompson said. “It was an important key.” Unbeaten
Byers (13-0), ranked number one in the state in Class 2A, outscored
Rosa Fort 15-2 in that opening period en route to a 60-44 win. “Tunica made a run and got back in it,” Thompson said. “They cut it to three in the third quarter.” Then the Lady Lions outscored the home team 21-12 in the fourth period. “Rachel (Jones) and Simone (Ryan) carried us down the stretch,” he said. Jones
was a perfect 10 for 10 on field goals, most on driving lay-ups, and
finished with 20 points. Ryan added 16. Ciara Seldon scored 10, hitting
three big threes in the first half. In the nightcap, the H.W. Byers boys fell to Tunica Rosa Fort 65-52. Their record went to 3-8 on the season. Upcoming Schedule The
Lions and Lady Lions were scheduled to host Marshall County rival Potts
Camp on Tuesday of this week to complete the pre-Christmas portion of
their schedule. They will play in the Northwest Invitational at
Northwest Community College in Senatobia December 27-29 and the Oxford
Tournament January 3-5.

Potts Camp teams knock off district foe By BARRY BURLESON Editor Potts Camp basketball teams won by 58 and 21 points Friday night at home and upped their division records to 2-0. Coach Tana Miller gave everybody plenty of playing time in a 91-33 rout of Strayhorn. The Lady Cardinals led 24-4 after one quarter and 45-14 at the half. “The kids off the bench - I’m proud of them,” Miller said. “They did a good job and got some valuable playing time.” Top point producers for Potts Camp were Lamonica Ingram with 24, Jasmine Harmon with 22 and Shanekqua Johnson with 12. The Lady Cardinals improved to 9-7 overall. Jeremy Siggers, Chris Sims and Lavonte Richmond combined for 53 points in the Cardinals’ 69-48 win over Strayhorn. Siggers scored 19, Sims 18 and Richmond 16. “It was good to get the division win, and those three really played well,” coach Brian Smith said. The Potts Camp boys built a commanding 36-20 halftime advantage. They, too, improved to 9-7 on the season.

Academy was well represented in this year’s Mississippi Private School
Association All-Star Football Game. Representing the Patriots, who
finished the season as the Class AA state runners-up, were (from left)
Brent Adams, Jake Paylor, coach Keith Wicker and Wesley Harris. The
North team lost to the South 32-22. Coach Wicker said the all-star
experience was fun for all involved. He said Adams, Paylor and Harris
played well. “It was fun,” Wicker said. “There were a lot of great ball
players involved and all had a good time.” |
MA sweeps Lee, splits with Kirk By BARRY BURLESON Editor Marshall Academy passed a huge road test Friday night. The
Lady Patriots and Patriots escaped Clarksdale with 57-44 and 57-45
wins, respectively, over Lee Academy. The MA girls improved to 14-6
overall and 3-1 in district, while the boys upped their marks to 12-1
