Potts Camp Lady Cardinals defeat Hickory Flat, Center Hill, Vardaman
By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Potts Camp Lady Cardinals won two squeakers and the other game by 39 points last week. Their three-for-three performance upped their season record to 5-3. First-year
coach Tana Miller called the two two-point wins, one over Hickory Flat
and the other versus Center Hill, “two heart attacks.” Kenyotta Jenkins’ 23 points led the way in the 53-51 win at Hickory Flat on Tuesday of last week. The
lead see-sawed. The Lady Cardinals were up 18-12 after one quarter and
trailed 25-24 at the half. They were down 36-34 after three quarters. Scoring in double digits for Hickory Flat were Kortney Tucker with 21, Beth Allen with 10 and Hannah Wilkerson with 10. Miller’s team built as much as a 16-point lead at home Friday night and then held on to beat Center Hill 59-57. “They’ve got some good athletes, and they came back and played with us,” Miller said. Jenkins and Samantha Nance tossed in 14 points each. Jasmine Harmon added 11. “The
girls really played well in both of those games,” she said. “We didn’t
shoot as well Friday night. We turned to our post players and they came
through.” The Potts Camp girls concluded the winning week by routing Vardaman 72-33 Saturday in the West Union Classic. The Lady Cards outscored Vardaman 29-5 in the second quarter to secure the win. “We started pressing and pulled away,” Coach Miller said. Nance
completed her strong week with a 22-point performance. Jenkins scored
14. Harmon and Shanekqua Jenkins followed with 11 each. Potts Camp boys The Cardinals had close contests, too, last week - losing by two and winning by two. Potts Camp fell 53-51 to rival Hickory Flat on November 6. “Missed free throws was the story of that game,” said coach Brian Smith. “It was a sloppy game - not well played.” The Cardinals trailed 26-21 at the half but cut that deficit to one after three periods. Tyrone Hampton and Chris Sims led Potts Camp with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Josh Martin did not play. For Hickory Flat, Caleb Van Tassell scored 14, Richard Van Tassell 11 and Terry Lee 10. The Potts Camp boys then survived an up-and-down game Friday night - beating Center Hill 68-66. “It was like a roller coaster,” Smith said. “Our inside game won it for us.” Sims poured in 28 points and had 17 rebounds. Josh Martin scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Hampton did not play. “We
didn’t have a full squad all week,” said Smith, whose team went to 5-2
on the season. “We have to get everybody on the same page.” Upcoming schedule The
Cardinals and Lady Cardinals visited Houlka Tuesday. They host Oxford
Thursday to close out the pre-Thanksgiving portion of their schedule. |
