Mt. Pleasant takes home four trophies The Mt. Pleasant Lions have ended the season triumphant. After traveling to Oxford to play in the championship games, all three age levels walked away victorious. The Mt. Pleasant Lions along with the Oxford Wildcats, Ashland Raiders, South Jackson Raiders, Grenada Mustangs, and the Walls Twisters gathered to participate in post-season play to determine the champions for the Mississippi Youth Football and Cheer League. Trying to maintain their status for third place in the regular season, the bantam division (ages 10-13-season record 4-2) played hard against the Oxford Wildcats in a high-scoring game with a score of 27-26. After going into overtime play, the bantam came away with the third place trophy. The peewee division (ages 7-9-season record 5-0) received two trophies this past weekend. After ending the season undefeated, they were awarded a trophy for being first place at the close of the regular season. After a tiring battle with the South Jackson Raiders and three overtimes, the peewee division received the second place trophy with a score of 27-26. The biggest game of the day was scheduled last but it was certainly a great ending to a long day. The midget division (ages 14-18) played against the Walls Twisters. Their opponent had been undefeated since they came into the league last year. After the end of regulation, the game was tied at 0-0. Both defenses were shutting down the other’s offense. It was a tough game to watch. The Lions scored in overtime to defeat the Twisters in a 7-0 victory and received the first place trophy for their division. Hats off to our awesome coaching staff – Olando Stephen, Wiley Paige, Garry Stigger, and Cleo Jones, Sr. (peewee Division); Lance Collins and Lorenzo Stephens (bantam division), and Michael Stephen, Louis Owens, and Leslie Gill, Jr (midget division) for your untiring dedication and commitment to our boys and to our program. The football season may be over, but the Mt. Pleasant Lions are not done yet. We are looking forward to completing other goals we set for the program. We are looking for mentors, volunteers, tutors, and financial support, as well, to keep this program going year round and to get a head start on season number three. Special thanks to Dan Mathias of the Oxford Wildcats for his hospitality and opening up the Oxford High School facility to host the championship games. We would also like to thank our parents for assisting us with transporting the players and cheerleaders to the Oxford and for the caravan of supporters who traveled with us.
