Organizers
for the Marshall-Benton Area Job Fair 2008 have set February 19 as the
date for next year’s job fair at the Eddie Lee Smith Jr. Multi-Purpose
Building in Holly Springs. Joe Buckner with the
Mississippi Job Fair Network said the annual job fair, one of 18
statewide next year, is important for the area and that people do
receive real job opportunities from this fair every year. Emphasis
for the next few meetings will be on enrolling many employers with the
fair who will have or expect to have job openings. The sole purpose of the job fair is to match people looking for good jobs with prospective employers, he said. A
good, solid turnout of employers and job seekers was seen last year,
Buckner said. There are always success stories, including last year a
gentleman leaving the fair without a job offer, going back inside with
Buckner and getting an offer with Canal Barge. “So, that gentleman can work the barge and do his handyman job, too,” Buckner said. Lots
of times a job offer can be had after a person is ready to pull out of
the parking lot, he said. Sometimes a person does not have a clear idea
of what type of job they are willing to ask for. “We
stand outside and talk to people and ask if they got an offer,” Buckner
said. “Those who have marketable skills get jobs and aggressive
recruiters get to hire them. Some people get four or five offers the
day of the fair.” Many, also, who do not get the job offer they want say the job fair is beneficial to them, he said. Employers
who want to rent booth space for the fair are encouraged to call the
Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce at 662-838-8127 or the Holly Springs
Chamber of Commerce at 662-252-2943. Or e-mail Buckner at
jobfair@mdes.ms.gov. Locally, Catholic Social
Services provides training for those seeking help with resumes,
information about how to be ready for the interview, and many other
helpful preparations including free resume writing. Call Catholic
Social Services at 662-252-1336 for an appointment. Catholic Social
Services is located behind St. Joseph Catholic Church in Holly Springs
on East Van Dorn. |
