Sam Reves receives 2007 Distinguished Service Award The 2007 Distinguished Service Award goes to Samuel “Sport” Reves of Holly Springs, a 1957 graduate of Holmes. Reves
was a member of the 1955-56 championship basketball team coached by
Gordon Carr. He was also a member of the 1956 state championship track
team. He finished second in the 110 with a time of ten seconds and
first in the 220 with a 23.5. Reves placed second in the high jump and
first in the long jump with an 18.5. Following
Holmes, Reves joined the Navy, receiving Navy Wings of Gold as a jet
fighter pilot in May, 1959. In 1960, he received Top Gun rating in F4D
aircraft and a Presidential citation for helping stop China from taking
Taiwan. Reves was a flight instructor 1961-1964, and wrote a textbook
for aerodynamics. As a medical astronaut in 1965, he helped develop a
device used to monitor respiration, pulse, temperature and blood
pressure to be used in moon walking. From August
1965 until August 1967 he served as a pilot during three tours of duty
in Vietnam. Reves retired from the military in 1969. He
then worked for the Federal Aviation Administration and taught air
traffic control. He received two awards for saving aircraft and lives.
He retired from the public sector in 1986 and answered a call to
full-time ministry. Reves graduated from seminary
in May, 1990, and became a volunteer chaplain in the Tennessee State
Prison System. He was the recipient of a commendation from Tennessee
Governor Don Sundquist for his work in the prison system. Following the
stint in Tennessee, he served as senior chaplain at the Holly Springs
prison until 1997, when his eyesight forced him to retire. During his
tenure as a minister, he wrote numerous gospel songs and even recorded
some. Reves and his wife, Ruth Onita Jones
Reeves, had three children --- Vicky Onita and Peggy Lee, both deceased
and Samuel S. Reves, Jr., who is a commercial electrician. The Reves have one grandchild, Samantha Marie Reves, 15.
