Body found burned in car By SUE WATSON Local and state agencies are investigating a death in a burned out car found over the weekend off Dogwood Road, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The burned car was found next to an old cemetery site on Mt. Carmel Road by a hunter Saturday, November 3, around 9 a.m., he said. ‘Home to Holly Springs’ By BETH BREITHAUPT Holly Springs got a shot in the arm for tourism last Tuesday, October 30, when author Jan Karon kicked off a book tour here to promote her new book entitled “Home to Holly Springs.” Karon, famous for her nine-book series known as the Mitford books, began her tour with a 2 p.m. tea at Annie’s Restaurant. It was attended by about 200 local fans eager to meet the author and purchase the first of probably three books in the new Father Tim series. Lamar resident faces dogfighting charge By SUE WATSON Benton County law officers disrupted what appeared to be a pit bull dog fighting operation last week and arrested a Lamar man on charges of dogfighting, according to deputy David Murphy with the sheriff’s office. Advisory board to help in growth areas By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors has OK’d a five-member advisory board to help keep up with a high number of rezoning requests in the northern one-quarter of District 3 which includes Barton, Cayce and the Deer Creek areas. Leadership Marshall recruits new class Organizing committees are putting the final touches to the Leadership Marshall 2008 curriculum and asking those interested in participating in a one-of-a-kind community experience to get their applications in, according to Sarah Sawyer with the leadership steering committee. Championship hunt set for this week; special guests coming to Fitch Farms The 2007 National Championship Hunt on the historic grounds of Fitch Farms-Galena Plantation in Holly Springs will include more than hunting. The big event is scheduled for November 8-10. Sam Reves receives 2007 Distinguished Service Award The 2007 Distinguished Service Award goes to Samuel “Sport” Reves of Holly Springs, a 1957 graduate of Holmes. Correction There was a mistake in last week’s story about the Kudzu Festival, which listed the winners in the Kansas City-sanctioned, barbecue cook-off. First place in the pork ribs category went to the Hot Rod Smokers and team members Shane Goode, Jimmy Walker, Troy Loupe and David Bailey.
