Cardinals claim division crown
For the third consecutive year, the Potts Camp boys’ cross country team won its division title.
The 2005 and 2006 wins were attained while participating in Class 2A, and this year’s championship came in Class 1A (Potts Camp’s 2007 Mississippi High School Activities Association classification).
The division crown, won last Saturday at the New Albany Sportsplex, will send the Cardinals to the state championship meet this weekend.
The Cardinals posted a low score of 29 to gain the division title, with Myrtle finishing a distant second at 47 points. West Union finished third with 54 points to earn a third-place finish.
Despite a 3.2 mile (5K) track that was “mud-ridden” from the persistent rain throughout the week, the Cardinals were able to post good times to win the meet. Four of Potts Camp’s runners finished in the top 10, plus the Cardinals boasted the first, second and third-place finishes.
Billy Mitchell, Kevin Williams, Chad Randolph and Corey Totten were selected to the all-division team by finishing in the top 10 at the division meet.
Mitchell finished first overall with a time of 18:56. Williams placed second with a time of 19:04, and Chad Randolph rounded out the top three finishes at 19:12. Totten finished ninth overall with a time of 19:48.
Matt Swinford was close behind Totten with a time of 20:08. George Hampton was sixth on the team’s roster with a 20:41. Dustin Minor followed with a time of 22:14, then Larry Miller at 22:34, Miles Moore at 22:38, and rounding out the team’s top 10 runners at the meet was Justin Mitchell.
The Cardinals travel to Mississippi College on Saturday, Nov. 3, to compete for the state Class 1A title.
