Ryan and Rachel Jones recently had the opportunity of a lifetime –
traveling to Villanova University, Penn., for the Blue Chip Basketball
Best of the Best showcase. The two
H.W. Byers Lady Lions participated in the prestigious event September
28. There were 50 athletes from across the country, divided into five
teams for two games each. “My trip
to Philadelphia was one of enjoyment,” Ryan said. “I had the
opportunity to meet some excellent players and the competition was high. “I
went to Philadelphia with one mindset, and that was to play my game.
Although my team full of guards did not win a game, I learned to step
my game up and meet the challenges bestowed upon me. But overall, the
exerience was great and fun.” Jones
said, “It was one of the greatest experiences that I have encountered.
There were over 115 scouts at this program. Girls from all over the
nation attended this showcase as well. I was a little nervous. I later
calmed my nerves and things began to work out just fine.” Ryan and Jones are coached by Jason Thompson. Ryan
has also been named to the list of Top 40 seniors in Mississippi by The
Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, while Jones has been selected in the list of
Top 20 underclassmen in the state. Special
thanks goes to the following individuals and businesses helping to
sponsor the trip to Villanova – Gary Hannah, Don Randolph, R.C.
Anderson, H.W. Byers Booster Club, Serenity Funeral Home, Brittenum
Funeral Home, Flick’s Amoco, Homestead Mortgage, Stateline Citgo,
Carlisle’s Big Star, The Antique Shop, A-1 Small Engines, Chuck Thomas
and Eddie Dixon.
