Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Spare time? Monday, someone jokingly said, “oh, you
can do that in your spare time.” Which hit the same bells in my head
that part of our Sunday School discussion hit. Somehow,
during the lesson on Jacob and Rebecca, we found ourselves discussing
“next week, after we do so-and-such, we’ll have more time.” Do
you find yourself thinking that? You know, “after the quilt show next
week (and I’ll bet there’ll be a column on that next week also); after
charge conference at church; after the craft fair at church; after
Thanksgiving, etc.” -- I’ll sit down and rest and do something “I” want
to do (nap comes immediately to mind). I guess I’m thinking about “spare” time because I need a lot of it, coming up just as soon as... We’ve
been discussing a new quilting frame at home and where to put it. My
dear, lovely husband came up with, what I think now, is a wonderful,
wonderful idea. He suggested
switching my sewing room -- which is now in the smallest room in our
house -- with our bedroom, which is the second largest room in the
house. Only the den or living room, whichever you prefer to call it, is
bigger. And then, not much. Immediately, I began to try and think of cons, as my head was filled with pros, as regards the sewing room. True, our bedroom would be much smaller, but, how much room do you need when you sleep? Our closets would have to stay in the new sewing room, but I think I could cope with that. I’ve measured and thought and measured and thought some more and all my brain can think of is “huge sewing room.” My
husband also wants me to make some quilted couch covers for the living
room/den. To do that, I really do need that new quilting frame and a
lot more room. Several friends had suggested ideas that I need to think about before beginning this huge remodeling task. 1) It’s going to require lots of work and cleaning. 2) Who’s going to do the work and cleaning? 3) I will be doing the work and cleaning. 4) When will I have time to do the work and the cleaning? 5) Am I gonna wanna paint, etc.? 6) I’m gonna do this in my “spare” time? My brain has 99.9 percent decided that this is a done deal. I’m getting a huge new sewing room and a much smaller sleeping room. Seems like a fair trade to me, but... Here comes that “spare” time again. Quilt
show at my quilt guild this weekend; charge conference at church Nov.
4; craft fair at church Nov. 10; Thanksgiving Nov. 22. I think I’m going to pass up my favorite holiday this year. After all -- “huge sewing room...”
