H.W. Byers students attend High School Day at JSUBy Kearee J. Jackson Members
of the junior and senior classes at H.W. Byers High School recently
traveled to Jackson State University’s High School Day. On Saturday,
October 6, the students arrived at the university with a warm welcome
from campus students. The students received valuable information
regarding the university such as: admissions requirements, scholarship
information, and academic programs information. They also received
welcomes from Jasmine Searcy, Miss Jackson State University, the
Student Government Association president, and the president of the
university. Not only did they learn about the college, but they were
able to see the JSU Dance Ensemble, Wavy Dave and the Baby Tigers, and
a Greek show where members from the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma
Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta sororities and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity
performed. “This opportunity has really allowed me to get the JSU
experience,” said Simone Ryan, a senior class member. “God‚ Family‚
JSU‚” was the main theme for the High School Day. Chaperone Lender Luse
said, “I was glad that the students were able to view my alma mater. I
think they will add this university to the list of colleges and
universities they would like to attend. “Ultimately,
it was a great trip and an awesome opportunity. After viewing the
campus and thoroughly enjoying it, maybe some of our students will
become a ‘Jacksonian’,” she said.
