The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots, Class
AA fast-pitch state champions, were honored at halftime of the football
game last Friday. Showing off their trophies are senior players (from

“Wow, what a ride,” was about
all head coach Susan Rodgers could say to her Lady Patriots as they
concluded their magical fast-pitch softball season October 3 at the
Mississippi Private School Association Overall Tournament.
Marshall Academy had won the State AA
Tournament just two days earlier.
Still on cloud nine and celebrating,
the Lady Patriots came out in the first game at Mississippi College
on fire, putting away Class A runner-up Franklin Academy 6-2.
MA scored early on singles by Lauren
Alexander and Mandy Bolden, a two-RBI double by Heather Tomlinson and
an RBI single by Chelsey Gilliam.
In the second inning, Alexander and Casey
Gibson were driven in by a two-RBI double from the bat of Mandy Bolden.
Alexander scored again in the fourth
on another RBI from Heather Tomlinson.
Alexander got the win on the mound for
the Lady Patriots.
MA’s next game October 3 in the
Overall Tournament pitted the Lady Patriots against the Jackson Prep
Lady Patriots, state champ in Class AAA.
The power hitters from Prep proved to
be more than the Marshall team could handle.
“Five unearned runs in the
first inning took the wind out of the sails for us,” Coach Rodgers
said. “It was hard for us to get any momentum going.”
Singles from Alexander and Bolden and
an RBI double from Heather Tomlinson were all the Lady Patriots could
muster.
MA fell 8-2.
In the go-home game, the Lady Patriots
faced the Centreville Lady Tigers again. They had beaten Centreville
twice for the state championship.
In the rematch game of the AA finals,
the Lady Patriots were not able to find the fire that had gotten them
a win over Franklin earlier in the day. Marshall lost 5-3.
“We are disappointed and
sad the season is over but we had a great season,” Rodgers said.
“We are going to miss the seniors who have been the building foundation
of this program.”
The seniors on this year’s team
are Mandy Bolden, Allie Kriss and Brittney Tomlinson.
Coach Rodgers said the Lady Patriots
have a strong nucleus coming back for next year and she looks forward
to another great season.
The Lady Patriots finished their state
championship season with a record of 28-13.
