| Cardinals take first at Corinth By BARRY BURLESON The Potts Camp cross country runners have already won first place in two meets this season. The boys claimed the 1A division crown Saturday in the Corinth Invitational and received medals for their big victory. The Cardinals also placed sixth overall. Kevin Williams was the top finisher for Potts Camp with a time of 19:01. Next was Chad Randolph at 19:18. Williams and Randolph were 32nd and 37th overall out of 148 runners in all divisions. The Cardinals also claimed first in their division in the Pontotoc Invitational on September 15. Williams was first in 1A with a time of 18:52. On September 4, Potts Camp participated in the Oxford Practice Meet. Participants only ran two miles. Randolph took fifth with a time of 11:46 and Mitchell ninth at 12:11. The Cardinals came in second behind Athens Bible School (of Alabama) in the Saltillo Invitational September 15. They ran against 1A, 2A and 3A schools, including Ripley, Myrtle, French Camp, Tremont, Mooreville, Nettleton, Amory, Aberdeen and West Union. Potts Camp’s top runners were Randolph – 10th place, 18:53; Williams, 12th place, 19:06; and Billy Mitchell, 20th, 19:55. The Cardinals ran against all classes in the Itawamba Invitational September 22 and finished fifth. Top runners for Potts Camp were Randolph – 13th place, 18:46; and Mitchell – 18th, 19:20. Williams went down with an injury and did not finish the race. Members of the Potts Camp boys team are Billy Mitchell, a senior; Dustin Minor and Randolph, both juniors; sophomores George Hampton, Corey Totten, Larry Miller and Justin Mitchell; and freshmen Kevin Williams, Matt Swinford and Miles Moore. Only one girl, Chelsea Staton, is running cross country. She has a foot injury and is scheduled to have surgery in January. “She has been struggling (due to the injury),” coach Karen Green said. “She has been working hard and making improvement, even though her foot has been very painful.” Upcoming cross country meets for Potts Camp include: • October 6, Myrtle Invitational, held at New Albany Sportsplex, varsity girls at 9 a.m. and varsity boys at 9:30 a.m. • October 20, Tupelo Invitational, varsity girls at 10 a.m. and boys at 11 a.m. • October 27, Division Meet, hosted by Myrtle at New Albany Sportsplex, girls at 2 p.m. and boys at 2:30 p.m. |
