Local News BriefsMarshall County Spelling Bee this Saturday at Rust College Spelling champions from all over Marshall County will face off for the number one title in the Marshall County Spelling Bee that will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. in the Doxey Building at Rust College. The purpose of the bee is to choose the spelling champion from area schools, both public and private, that will represent Marshall County in the Mid-South Spelling Bee in Memphis, Tenn., in March 2007. All public and private schools in Marshall County are invited to participate in the spelling bee. Each school has been asked to send a representative from grades 5-8 to compete in the spelling bee. School supporters, relatives and friends are encouraged to come and support their school representatives. This year, a Spirit Award will be given to the school that has the most supporters. The public is also invited. The Holly Springs-Marshall County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is the proud sponsor of the annual Marshall County Spelling Bee. Relay for Life kickoff party scheduled Thursday at 6 p.m. The American Cancer Society Marshall County Relay for Life will hold its annual kickoff on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Eddie L. Smith Jr. Multi-Purpose Building in Holly Springs. Get your team together and come and register. All team members and sponsors are welcome. Mary Ann Day and Florean White are the 2007 honorary chairpersons. The Marshall County Relay for Life raised over $53,000 in 2006 and the goal for 2007 is $55,000. Last year over 300 persons participated in this worthwhile cause. The 2007 Marshall County Relay for Life will be held June 8 at Sam Coopwood Park. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and end at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 9. Everyone is urged to get involved and support this event. Deadline to qualify for 2007 elections is March 1 No local candidates have signed up for political races since the publication of last week’s newspaper. The deadline to qualify in the Marshall County circuit clerk’s office is Thursday, March 1. The first primary is Tuesday, Aug. 7, with the runoff set for Tuesday, Aug. 28. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
