The Marshall Academy softball team
remained perfect in district play last week with wins over Carroll and
Lee (Clarksdale).
Traci Rodgers’ carried the big
stick at Carroll on August 27. She went four of four from the plate
with two doubles, a triple and a single as the Lady Patriots dominated
9-2.
Other leading hitters include Mandy Bolden
with two singles and Heather Tomlinson with a home run over the left
field fence. Lauren Alexander, who was the winning pitcher, also had
a single.
The MA girls, behind the perfect pitching
of Casey Gibson, blanked Lee (Clarksdale) 7-0 the next day, August 28,
at home.
Gibson gave up no hits and no walks.
She had four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
“Our defense was awesome
behind her, only committing one error,” said head coach Susan
Rodgers.
Anna Roberts was two of three from the
batter’s box with two singles. Bolden had an inside-the-park homer.
Getting one hit each were Rodgers, Heather Tomlinson, Alexander and
Brittney Tomlinson.
The victory upped Marshall’s district
record to 6-0.
The Lady Patriots closed the week with
a disappointing 4-2 loss to non-district rival North Delta.
“Our defense was solid,”
Rodgers said. “We only committed one error, but we could not get
hits at the times we needed them. North Delta played a very good game.”
Getting one hit each for the Lady Patriots
were Bolden, Heather Tomlinson and Chelsey Gilliam.
Alexander was the losing pitcher. She
gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one.
MA’s overall record went to 12-5.
The Lady Patriots were scheduled to host
Indianola Academy Tuesday. They visit Magnolia Heights Thursday at 3:30
p.m. and then play in the Greenville Tournament Saturday, Sept. 8. Next
Monday, Sept. 10, they host Kirk at 4 p.m., and next Tuesday, Sept.
