Mother found guilty of abuse

A Marshall County jury convicted a Byhalia woman on a felony child abuse charge last week in a trial that spanned three days.

Firemen fight 280-acre blaze

A 280-acre woods fire on Puppy Hill and Bethlehem roads Friday was fought for five hours by numerous fire departments, according to Ken Holbrook, chief of the Holly Springs Fire Department.

Assault victim dies; authorities upgrade charges

Aggravated assault charges against Willie Taylor, 51, of Battle Road in the Byhalia area were upgraded to murder Monday following the death of Audrey Tunstall, 27.

Police plan Labor Day roadblocks

Two people were arrested on charges of auto burglary and one on aggravated assault last week, according to Holly Springs Police Chief Robert Pearson.

ARC tours county

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is just one of many state agencies that has helped Marshall County get on the move in recent years through its financial support of water, sewer and road projects in developing areas. “We are just proud of the work we are doing here,” Armour said. “There is a lot of economic development here and Governor Haley Barbour is doing a lot with the Mississippi Development Authority and ARC in providing funds for it.” The local delegation, Sen. Ralph Doxey and Representatives Kelvin Buck, Tommy Woods and Jack Gadd have helped keep dollars flowing into MDA and ARC, he said. “Everybody coming to the table makes it work,” Perkins added. Renick, executive director of Marshall County Industrial Development Authority, said the numerous projects moved forward by MDA and ARC in the county and town and cities would be cost prohibitive for taxpayers, if the local governments had to shoulder the burden for economic development. “ARC is doing exactly what their mission statement says,” Renick said.

White Oak Festival October 13

The annual White Oak Festival in Byhalia is Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. until.

The White Oak Festival is sponsored by and benefits the Byhalia Sports Association. It will be held at the intersection of Highway 309 South and Highway 78.

The entry deadline for vendors is October 5. Spaces are approximately 15 feet long. Additional space is allowed for concessions. Spaces must be reserved and paid for in advance. Booth space for concessions will be $75 with only five concession booths allowed. All other spaces are $25. There will be a $10 additional charge for electrical hookups.

Vendors are responsible for all equipment used for their exhibits. Set-up will not be allowed before the day of the festival. All vendors will be advised of their set-up time.

Missing woman found

Search and rescue teams with the Marshall and Benton County sheriff’s departments worked overnight last week searching for a missing mom from Potts Camp. Pictured taking a well-deserved break are Lisa Hiatt with Chloe, Potts Camp Police Chief David Pannell and Randy Harper with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. The mom was located in Potts Camp just minutes after this picture was taken on Highway 178 East at about 9:30 a.m. Friday.

In-flight emergency forces helicopter landing
