A busy week on the softball diamond
saw the Marshall Lady Patriots go 3-3 against some strong competition.
MA opened the week with a 3-1 conference
win at Lee (Clarksdale) Monday, Aug. 13.
Casey Gibson was the winning pitcher.
Lauren Alexander led the offense. She
went two-of-three on the afternoon.
The Marshall offense was red hot Tuesday,
Aug. 14, in another road victory, this one 8-2 over Indianola Academy.
Leading the offense were Mandy Bolden
and Casey Gibson with three hits each. Bolden had two singles and a
double and Gibson three singles.
Anna Roberts connected for a double and
a single, and Traci Rodgers added two singles.
Heather Tomlinson had one hit, and it
was a huge one, a grand slam in the fifth inning.
The Lady Patriots returned home Thursday
and “played a great game against a very solid team,” coach
Susan Rodgers said.
MA lost 1-0 to Bayou Academy.
Alexander took the loss from the mound. Traci Rodgers was the defensive
star – making a running, diving catch in center field.
The Lady Patriots then participated in
the Starkville Tournament Saturday, going 1-2 in the event.
They began the day with a 6-5 win over
Class AAA Madison Ridgeland Academy. Alexander earned the pitching victory.
In game two, Marshall dropped a 12-2
decision to another larger school, Hillcrest. Casey Gibson was the losing
pitcher.
“The game was played in the
rain and we struggled,” Coach Rodgers said.
Marshall wrapped up the tournament with
3-2 loss to Copiah. Alexander took the loss from “the hill.”
“We struggled against slow
pitching and could not get our offense going,” Rodgers said.
The Lady Patriots, 7-4 on the season,
visited Kirk Monday of this week and then hosted Lee (Ark.) on Tuesday.
They travel to North Delta Thursday and
then go to Carroll next Monday, Aug. 27. Marshall hosts Lee (Clarksdale)
next Tuesday, Aug. 28. All those games start at 4 p.m.
