Hawks go to New Albany Thursday for practice games
By BARRY BURLESON
Clifford Brown, head coach of the Holly Springs football Hawks, will be looking for leaders Thursday night at New Albany.
Holly High will play the Bulldogs in a jamboree. The varsity teams from the two schools kick off at 7:30. Prior to that, there will be ninth grade and junior varsity jamboree contests at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
“Winning in a jamboree is just a bonus,” Brown said. “Most of all, we must create some depth and find some leaders, particularly on defense. We also need better production out of our offense early in the year.”
New Albany is also a larger school, a 4A compared to Holly Springs’ 3A classification.
“If we can hold our own against some of the bigger schools, it will make us feel better later on going into district play,” he said.
Last week’s practices went well, he said. But the heat was tough. Practices were moved to 6 p.m. but still players were getting sick.
“We had to dress down some and go helmets only,” Brown said. “And we had to give them a lot of breaks.
“We’re trying to iron out some kinks.”
The Hawks kick off the new season Friday night, Aug. 31, at home against a 4A power, Lafayette.
