Rags to Riches Tour August 18
A classic car cruise is set to tour Holly Springs and visit Poteet Ford Farm Saturday, August 18, according to Allen McDaniel, curator of the Tupelo Automobile Museum.
Over 100 classic cars will be in the tour that leaves Olive Branch City Hall at 9:30 a.m. and will take Old Highway 78 through downtown Holly Springs as the tour travels on to Tupelo. Poteet Ford Farm is the last stop on the tour, a free event, scheduled at 3:30 p.m. The tour at Poteet Ford Farm includes a visit to George Poteet’s shop, vehicle storage sheds and between 30 and 40 top-quality classics, street rods and muscle cars.
In Tupelo, the tour includes a visit to the Elvis Presley Museum, the Tupelo Automobile Museum, and a catered barbecue lunch.
Registration for the tour in Tupelo is $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 7-12, and free entry for children under 7 years of age.
McDaniel invites the Holly Springs community to bring their lawn chairs to downtown and watch the cruisers as they travel through town, take the Tupelo Tour and/or visit Poteet Ford Farm.
The 2007 Rags to Riches Tour remembers the days when Elvis and his family left Tupelo and drove up Highway 78 to Memphis through all the little towns along the way.
“They had no idea they were taking a rags to riches ride,” McDaniel said. “The young man from Tupelo would find his fortune while living in Memphis and our lives changed right along with his. Elvis drove Highway 78 back and forth on countless visits to Tupelo and it was part of his life just as it was ours. It just seems like a fitting tribute to retrace that trip on the old road and relive a little of the past before it escapes us forever.”
To register a vehicle for the tour, obtain a registration form from The South Reporter, fill out and mail to the address on the form.
