‘Queen’
for a day
My
friend Jane drove me nuts over my birthday present this year. She kept
saying that I really needed it and that she was sure I’d want
her to have one just exactly like it.
Turns out, she was exactly right. I did
need one and I would have been devastated if she didn’t have one
also.
My birthday was Sunday and I got to church
before Jane, so I was sitting at the table when she came in with a bright,
shiny bag that I was sure had my birthday present in it. (I’m
as bad as most children about presents!)
The second I saw my wonderful, sparkling,
pearl encrusted tiara, I knew exactly what Jane had been talking about!
I did need a tiara and so did she! She
said she didn’t want to wear hers though, since it was my birthday.
I will have to say that there aren’t
many churches where you could wear a tiara all morning and get very
few weird looks.
There are many, many jokes about quilt
queens and one little story about a lady who, when she puts on her tiara
at work, everyone knows to stay as far away from her as possible.
I find it impossible not to be cheerful
with a tiara on though.
Jane and I have wanted tiaras since our
trip to the Nashville quilt show last year. We ran into a group of ladies,
who were actually on a business trip and not there for the quilts at
all — the “high-sellers” all were wearing bright,
sparkly tiaras.
We decided at that moment, that we really,
really needed tiaras!
Jane and I are headed back to the Nashville
quilt show in a week or so. We can’t wait.
The weatherman says it’s as hot
in Nashville as it is here, but we’re not really worried. The
Opryland Hotel and Convention Center is really well air conditioned.
And we don’t leave until they throw us out (along with the other
20,000 or so quilters who won’t leave either).
This year, just Jane, Binky and
I are going. Binky loves to sew almost as much as Jane and I do. She
recently made herself a pair of “alien” pajamas. They’re
a bit patchworked, as we didn’t have enough alien fabric, but
they sure are cute!
