The H.W. Byers girls basketball
team did not take the summer off.
Coach Jason Thompson’s Lady Lions
participated in team camps at Northwest Community College, Birmingham
Southern and the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The also visited Bellarmine
University in Louisville, Ky., for the Blue Chip High Exposure Camp.
“We were able to get experience
and exposure,” Thompson said about his team’s summer schedule.
“It gave some of the younger players a chance to get experience
when the games really didn’t count. Plus, our players had an opportunity
to be seen (by college coaches).
“The girls are very excited
about our upcoming season.”
Thompson thanked the businesses and individuals
who supported the Lady Lions with contributions.
“A big thank you goes out
to all of the people who helped us this summer,” he said. “Without
you, this would not have been possible. We are very thankful and appreciative.
We had great support from our community.”
Two Lady Lions, junior Rachel Jones and
senior Simone Ryan, were selected for the all-star game at the High
Exposure Camp and were picked in the top 20 players out of 364 girls.
Junior Amanda Jones was selected in the top 40 players. All three started
for their respective teams at camp.
“We definitely had some players
raise the eyebrows of college coaches,” Thompson said.
The H.W. Byers Lady Lions finished 26-11
last season and made the state playoffs in Jackson for the first time
in school history.
They knocked off Philadelphia in round
one before falling in the state semi-finals to Coahoma County. They
lost four seniors from that squad.
