Lady Patriots blank defending champions
What a way to start a season.
Marshall Academy opened the softball season August 2 against defending state champion Leake Academy on the road. According to coach Susan Rodgers, “To be the best we have to beat the best.”
Mandy Bolden set the tone, leading off with a bunt that turned into a home run on a Leake Academy error.
In the third inning Casey Gibson led off with a single. After stealing second, Lauren Alexander moved her to third on a drive to the opposite field. Heather Tomlinson then hit a long fly ball to center field, allowing Gibson to score from third.
Bolden was the only player with multiple hits in the big 2-0 victory. Other players with hits were Alexander and Traci Rodgers.
Casey Gibson recorded the win with a five-hit shutout.
MA avenged a loss to Leake in last year’s state title matchup.
Marshall then traveled to the Bayou Academy Invitational Tournament August 4.
In the first game the Lady Patriots defeated North Delta 6-3. Alexander posted the victory from the mound. Scoring runs were Bolden, Alexander, Heather Tomlinson, Rodgers and Anna Roberts. Several players had multiple hits for extra bases.
In the second game Marshall lost 5-2 to Indianola Academy. It came down to the wire and the contest was lost in extra innings.
Coach Rodgers said, “We made mental errors as well as a few physical errors that cost us the game.”
Casey Gibson recorded the loss on the hill.
Scoring runs were Tomlinson and Alexander.
In the third game, Marshall faced off against district foe Carroll Academy.
Carroll got on the board in the fourth. Marshall answered in the top of the fifth with two runs. Roberts started a two-out rally with a base hit, followed by a triple from Bolden and a single from Gibson.
Carroll answered by tying the game with a run in its half of the fifth inning.
Both teams posted a run in the sixth.
Marshall came out on top, 7-3, thanks to four runs in the seventh.
Alexander recorded the victory.
MA, 3-1 to start the season, hosted Marvell Monday. The first conference game will be played Thursday at home against Carroll at 4 p.m. Next Monday, Aug. 13, the Lady Patriots visit Lee (MS) and next Tuesday, Aug. 14, they go to Indianola.
