Marshall’s Mandy Bolden (10) beats a throw to first against
Indianola. |
What a way to start a season.
Marshall Academy opened the softball
season August 2 against defending state champion Leake Academy on the
road. According to coach Susan Rodgers, “To be the best we have
to beat the best.”
Mandy Bolden set the tone, leading off
with a bunt that turned into a home run on a Leake Academy error.
In the third inning Casey Gibson led
off with a single. After stealing second, Lauren Alexander moved her
to third on a drive to the opposite field. Heather Tomlinson then hit
a long fly ball to center field, allowing Gibson to score from third.
Bolden was the only player with multiple
hits in the big 2-0 victory. Other players with hits were Alexander
and Traci Rodgers.
Casey Gibson recorded the win with a
five-hit shutout.
MA avenged a loss to Leake in last year’s
state title matchup.
Marshall then traveled to the Bayou Academy
Invitational Tournament August 4.
