The
“genesis” of Marshall County; chapter five
By
TOM STEWART
The Fifth Meeting of the First Board
During this meeting, several important
things were determined and our public landmarks were established as
well as Holly Springs becoming the county seat. The original text is
quite “wordy” and some may find the language and sentence
structure unfamiliar.
“Monday April 25th 1836
William Davis Isaac Love and the Proprietors
of Holly Springs severally presented propositions which are ordered
to be filed with the clerk for further examination.
The Board of Police for the County
of Marshall after an examination of the different situations proposed
for the location of the County Seat of said County have determined
to locate the said County Seat upon Section Six, of Township Four
of Range Two upon conditions that the owners of said Section make
to said Board of Police a warranty title in fee simple for Fifty Acres
of said Section, to be selected by said Board and also Convey to said
Board to be used as a Commons the ground now enclosed around The Holly
Spring and the Spring known as Randolph Springs with a suitable quantity
of ground for public uses, said Conveyances to be made on application
of the Board of Police.”
(adjourned until the next morning)
“This day came William
H Bourland into open Court and presented the following Certificate
(viz)
State of Mississippi
I Leander R Guy President of the Board
of Police of this county of Marshall do hereby certify that upon comparing
the polls of an Election held in said County on the 14th and 15th
days of April 1836 for the election of County officers that William
H Bourland is duly and Constitutionally elected clerk of the Probate
and Police Courts of said county Given under my hand and seal the
25th day of April 1836
L.R. Guy {Seal}”
And so it was done...... What is not
understood by most and not clearly stated is that the second piece of
land was “Spring Hollow” and the first is the Court square.
It was originally intended to be a Park or “Commons” and
the first court house was not built there. Think of these locations
before the streets existed and try to imagine their ability to plan
it.
Next - A shocker!! The town changes names......
