The next order of business for the “Police
Board” was to locate the County Seat. While some may think that
Holly Springs was always assumed to be the only choice, it was not as
little was here at the time with most of the business area just under
construction. The minutes read as follows:
“4. Thursday April 19th 1836
Court met according to adjournment at the Tavern
of Samuel McAlexander present Leander R Guy president Kemp L Holland
Martin Tally Shipman Denton and William L Allen Members of the board
of County Police William H. Bourland Clerk & Livi McCrosky Sheriff
the board with a sicse(?) to the location of the County Seat and did
in proper process the examination of the following places.
The geographic center of the County of Marshall
which all agreed by the board to be a situation not suitable for the
County Seat and is therefore condemned. The Town of Holly Springs
and it’s vicinity.
Isaac Livi’s Place on Section 16 T4 R2
Col. Davis’s place in Section 7 T4 R3
Ordered that the Court be adjourned until tomorrow
morning 9:00 to meet at Itawamba.
Court met according to adjournment at the House
of Stephen Greer in the town of Itawamba Present as on Yesterday.
The Board with a vicer(?) to the location of the
County Seat presented in proper person to further examinations and
examined the following places viz
The town of Itawamba and its vicinity
Section twenty six Township three Range and Shippessah.

will on Monday the 25th day of April Inst. receive proposals from
persons wishing to make locations of the County Seat which proposals
shall be in writing
Ordered that Court be adjourned to meet again at
Holly Springs on the 25th inst.

And so the search for the County seat

are defined.
