Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson
received a certificate last week for his department’s participation
in the state’s anti-litter program.
Inmates under sheriff’s department
supervision were already collecting trash along Marshall County roads
when in 2002 the department was invited to join the state program for
inmates organized by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).
The partnership with MDOT has enabled inmates to help clean litter on
state highways, Dickerson said.
Only non-violent offenders are permitted
to work in the anti-litter program, Dickerson said. The program has
been highly successful in collecting thousands of bags of litter on
two- and four-lane state highways and on county roads, he said.
“It’s a program we’re
real proud of,” Dickerson said. “We present a better image
of Marshall County to visitors and some decide to move here.”
MDOT assists by providing a van, mileage
reimbursement, and pay to the department for a portion of a deputy’s
salary. And inmates also benefit, being spared countless hours of boredom
and providing useful service while doing their time. Inmates can get
time reduced off their sentences by participating in the program.
Dickerson said his department, by carefully
selecting inmates who participate in the anti-litter program, has had
little difficulty over the years. Only one inmate has walked off.
“And we had him back in custody
in a short time,” Dickerson said.
This year from January through May, inmates
have picked up 842 bags of litter on state-maintained highways in Marshall
County, according to Courtney Blair with MDOT.
