Pulitzer winner dies in accident

A syndicated cartoonist and winner of the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 1988 was killed Tuesday morning in an automobile accident near Holly Springs.

Hill County Picnic

Around 2,000 people attended the second annual Hill Country Picnic June 29-30 near Potts Camp. A portion of that large crowd is seen enjoying entertainment on Saturday provided by Rising Star Fife and Drum Band. Organizer Kenny Brown said people came from 30 states and four or five foreign countries. There were 250 campers and 18 bands. “Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time,” he said. “I was amazed at the number of people who came to us, thanking us for doing this. New building at Rust
Construction of the Hamilton Science Center on the Rust College Campus is ahead of schedule at 42 percent complete, according to Ishmell Edwards with the college. The center should be open for the 2008 fall semester, he said. The three-story science center will have 18,928 square feet of space, some of which will be for undergraduate research. The building will have a greenhouse and facilities for animal research. An enclosed breezeway will connect two floors between the old and the new buildings. The McDonald Science Building will have space for electronic classrooms, Edwards said, after the Hamilton Science Center is open. The fall 2007 term is just around the corner. Orientation for freshmen is set for August 18 with registration on August 24. Upper classes register August 27-28 and classes begin August 29.

Red Banks Road bridge opening soon

The Coldwater River Bridge project will be open after the paving cures and the new construction is striped, according to county engineer Larry Britt, who reported to the Marshall County Board of Supervisors last week.

Practice voting available

Lucy Carpenter, Marshall County circuit clerk, is encouraging practice ahead of time on the new Diebold voting machines.

The August 7 primary elections are just a few weeks away and many voters may have not used the machines.

Flushing fire plugs

Marco House with the Holly Springs Fire Department was busy recently making the rounds, flushing out fire plugs. House said the flushing, which removes about 90 percent of the rust from the water system pipes, is essential to firefighting. “We have to get the rust out so it doesn’t clog up the pumps on fire trucks,” he said. “This is very necessary. Every plug in the city and county will be flushed. So please bear with us.” Residences that have rusty water as a result of the cleaning can open outdoor faucets until the water runs clear. House said the fire department does the same thing; the first water out of the plug is rusty and they leave the valve open until water runs clear.
