Pages from the Past 10 Years Ago - May 29, 1997 Selected to intern in Washington Marie Austin Moore of Holly Springs has been selected to intern this summer in the Washington office of U.S. Senator Trent Lott. She has worked for the past two years in Lott’s field office in Oxford. Moore, a senior at the University of Mississippi, was recently tapped into the Mortar Board, a senior honor society. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Rook Moore III of Holly Springs. Lauren Webb receives awards Lauren Elizabeth Webb of Holly Springs, a junior at St. Mary’s Episcopal School in Memphis, Tenn., was the recipient of five awards at the school’s Class Day ceremonies. Journalism award Amy Hall of Potts Camp received the Dub Shoemaker Journalism Scholarship award at the University of Mississippi. The award is given to a full-time, journalism major. She is the daughter of Larry and Pam Hall of Potts Camp. 25 Years Ago - June 3, 1982 Stennis carries county To the surprise of few, U.S. Senator John C. Stennis breezed to an easy win of the Democratic nomination to retain his Senate seat, while Republican Party operative Haley Barbour won the GOP nomination in the first primary. Just under 1,500 Marshall Countains went to the polls Tuesday in a race with no local entries. Phi Kappa Phi initiate Paul Crutcher of Holly Springs is a new initiate of Phi Kappa Phi honorary at the University of Mississippi. Phi Kappa Phi national honorary fraternity is the highest scholastic honor to be obtained at Ole Miss. Paul is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Crutcher. New chairmen Newly elected intramurals chairmen for Delta Gamma sorority at Mississippi State University are Mindy Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Miller of Holly Springs and Julie Bonner of Memphis, Tenn. 50 Years Ago - May 30, 1957 Mrs. Frank Hopkins Sr. receives Butler Award Mrs. Frank Hopkins Sr. was recently presented a plaque for “Quarter of A Century Continuous Ben Franklin Operation.” The presentation was made for Butler Brothers by Herbert Wollard of Memphis, Tenn., Ben Franklin supervisor in this area. Mrs. Hopkins’ husband bought his first stock of goods from Butler Bros. when he opened the Racket Store in 1909 at the present location of the Golden Rule. After Mr. Hopkins’ death in 1953, their son Frank Jr. returned to Holly Springs and was associated with his mother at the store. In March Mrs. Hopkins sold the business to Fred A. DeBardeleben, who had for a number of years operated a Ben Franklin store in Memphis, Tenn. Teens Awhirl by Nettie Smith The time has come for Carole Jean to bid you farewell, but I will try to take up where she left off. I know the seniors are having a wonderful time in New Orleans and the juniors really enjoyed their picnic, Friday, thanks to their sponsor, Mr. Wiggs. Report
