Patriots knock off Colts in spring contest
Keith Wicker got to see his first Marshall Academy football team in a game-type situation Saturday, and he liked what he saw.
The Patriots defeated Lee (Clarksdale) 16-6 in a spring jamboree matchup at North Delta.
“We put out a good effort,” said Wicker, who is taking over as head coach of the Patriot program. “Everybody wants to win, even in the spring, and we accomplished that. The kids are excited about it.
“The mistakes we made are very correctable, and we have time to do that before the season kicks off.”
MA, which opens the season August 24 against Lee (Ark.) at home, was missing five starters in the spring contest due to various injuries. Wicker said he rotated a lot of players around versus the Colts on Saturday. That included using three different Patriots at quarterback.
“I’m very pleased at this point,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting everyone out there.”
He has been busy during the spring putting in new offense and defensive packages. He said, for the most part, his players have responded well.
Wicker said the Patriots will be busy in the summer, too, lifting weights and staying in shape. The first day of practice for the next season will be August 1.
“It will be here before we know it,” he said. “and we look forward to kicking it in gear.”
