Pages from the Past 10 Years Ago - May 15, 1997 Ashland industry donates $50,000 to school A $50,000 donation from an Ashland industry is providing seed money for a 4,000 square foot computer discovery lab for Benton County students. The grant was from the Mecklenburger Foundation, part of TCI’s parent company. Volunteer of the year Al Klomps was presented the Volunteer of the Year award for the Holly Springs Retirement Attraction program by Barbara McDonald, director of Hometown Mississippi Retirement. He was also presented a plaque by Gov. Kirk Fordice. Wins at Dixie National B.J. Thomas, 10-year-old son of Barry and Karen Thomas and Shez Got Boots (Jill) won the youth barrels at the Dixie Nationals annual AQHA horse show in Jackson. B.J. and Jill won second place in 1996 and He also placed in this class on Shamrock. 25 Years Ago - May 20, 1982 Former editor of The South Reporter dies Opal VanDorn Whitten, 72, died May 12 in Memphis, Tenn. “Whitt” as he was affectionally known, was editor and publisher of The South Reporter from Aug. 3, 1944 through June 25, 1953. He began working at the newspaper in 1938 as a linotype operator. He and his wife Janie, who was the business manager of the newspaper, moved to Holly Springs from Marks. Mr. Whitten sold the paper in 1953 to Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Taylor. State Science Fair winners Kim Spencer, Pam Kloha, Debbie Kloha, Don Clayton and Skipper Green were Marshall Academy winners of the State Science Fair held recently in Greenwood. Danny Tate elected VFW commander Danny Tate of Holly Springs was recently elected Commander of the 14th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is a member of the Collins-Hurdle Post No. 5697 in Holly Springs and is the first Vietnam era veteran in the 14th district to be elected commander. He is the fourth in the state to achieve this honor. 50 Years Ago - May 16, 1957 Local girls model in Cotton Fashion Parade The Cotton Carnival’s daytime parade, featuring “Cotton Fashions on Parade” will be televised and can be seen on WHBQ-TV on Thursday. Local girls modeling will be Betty Wynne on the float “Spring Nocturne,” sponsored by La Clede’s and Carole Jean Brown on the float “Garden Party,” sponsored by Phil A. Halle. Supper at Golden Acres compliments Gene Lanier Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Golden entertained with a barbecue supper on the lawn of their country home, Golden Acres, on Thursday night, honoring their son Eugene Lanier, a member of the Holly High graduating class. The host and hostess were assisted by Constance Lanier. Dancing was enjoyed on the lawn after supper. Guests were members of the senior class with their dates and Mrs. Hamilton Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Norman McKenzie Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Williams Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Norman McKenzie Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie O’Dell.
