Ryan chosen for state skills academy By BARRY BURLESON Simone Ryan will participate in the Mississippi Girls Skills Academy this weekend as one of the 25 top high school basketball players in the state. The 5’11’ forward averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two and a half blocks per game for the H.W. Byers Lady Lions last season. The May 11-12 event, sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, will be held at Jackson Prep. “To make this top 25 speaks volumes about her talent and what people think of her,” said head coach Jason Thompson, who will help at the skills academy. Ryan was a star in the Lady Lions’ most successful season ever. They made the state tournament for the first time in school history, defeating defending state champ Philadelphia in round one before falling to Coahoma County in the semi-finals. Byers finished 26-11. “She’s an extremely hard worker - relentless after the ball,” Thompson said about Ryan, who will be a senior next season. “She always around the ball and that comes from will power and determination. “She’s working every day to get better. She’s developed her mid-range game. I let her face up and beat people off the dribble, and she can hit threes, too. “She should be a complete player her seniors season. She will give it total effort each night. And she’s a real good student, too.” Report News:
