Local News BriefsUnemployment rate for Marshall falls to 6.3 percent The Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) announced recently the unemployment rate for Mississippi was 6.8 percent for the month of March, which equaled the rate posted for February. Twenty-eight counties, including Marshall, reported unemployment rates equal to or less than the overall state rate. DeSoto County recorded the lowest rate at 3.9 percent, followed by Rankin and Lamar counties at 4.6 and 4.8, respectively. Marshall County’s rate for March stood at 6.3 percent. Benton County’s rate was 8.8. Jefferson and Clay counties posted the highest rates at 13.7 and 12.4, respectively. Thirteen counties posted double-digit rates. John Jewell Aircraft hosting 30-year celebration May 19 John Jewell Aircraft announces its 30th anniversary celebration and open house. Activities are set for Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holly Springs-Marshall County Airport. Everyone is urged to join John Jewell Aircraft as the company celebrates 30 years of providing quality products and services to the general aviation industry. Aircraft and facilities will be on display, plus there will be good food and homemade ice cream. Food Drive set for Saturday; put food in sack by mailbox The 15th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is scheduled for this Saturday, May 12. Your United States Postal Service carrier urges you to put non-perishable food items in a sack by your mailbox, and they will be delivered to a local food bank for you. The Holly Springs Charity Walking Horse Classic will be held Saturday, May 19, at 5 p.m. at the Marshall County Fairgrounds. It is sponsored by the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce and benefits the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Chamber. The fairgrounds is located on Highway 7 North, Holly Springs. Tickets are $5 for adults; children 6 and under free. Community Health Fair Thursday in Holly Springs The seventh annual Eddie L. Smith Community Health Fair, sponsored by Alliance HealthCare System, is this week. A men’s health forum was held Tuesday and a women’s luncheon is set for Wednesday at noon at the hospital. The health fair will be held Thursday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holly Springs Multi-Purpose Building. It will include blood pressure checks, prescription drug information and height, weight and vision screenings. Report News:
