Local News BriefsFive running in Potts Camp; election scheduled April 17 Five candidates are seeking a vacant alderman position in Potts Camp. The latest qualifiers before last Thursday’s deadline are Kevin Harris and J.C. Pruitt Jr. They join earlier qualifiers Dollean Porter, Sabrina Porter and James “Johnny” Westmoreland. The special election is set for Tuesday, April 17, in the Town of Potts Camp to fill the seat on the board of aldermen. Alderman Al Beard died February 24, almost halfway through his four-year term and leaving a vacancy on the five-member board. Voting on April 17 will take place at town hall. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The term will run through June 2009. City coordinates flag contest; deadline for entries is May 1 Show your city pride by participating in the City of Holly Springs flag contest to design a city flag. The contest is open to students in grades seven through 12 who attend schools in the City of Holly Springs. Entry deadline is May 1. Submit entries to Mayor’s Office, 160 South Memphis Street, Holly Springs, MS 38635. The winner will receive a $100 savings bond. Schools closing two days for Easter, reopen next Tuesday Marshall County schools, Holly Springs city schools and Marshall Academy will be closed Friday, April 6, and Monday, April 9, for Good Friday and Easter break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 10. Marshall County Library sponsors safe driving class An AARP Safe Driving class has been scheduled at the Marshall County Library in Holly Springs for April 24 and 25. The class will meet from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. AARP Safe Driving classes are eight-hour driver education refresher courses for drivers 50 years of age and over. The law in Mississippi mandates that students 55 years of age and up who complete the class be entitled to receive an appropriate discount on their automobile insurance premium for the following three years. You do not have to be a member of AARP to enroll and you will not be required to pass any exams or tests. You must attend both four-hour sessions to receive your completion certificate. To register for the class, call 662-252-3823 at the library before April 23. A $10 materials fee is payable at the start of the first day of class. Class size will be limited to 25 students. Please pay by cash only. Marshall County Library is happy to sponsor this AARP Safe Driver class as a service to all mature drivers in Holly Springs and the surrounding communities. Report News:
