Locals enjoy free-throw success
After taking first place honors in the local tournament staged by Council #8760 of the Knights of Columbus, five contestants qualified for the shootout in Madison. The St. Joseph’s Council competition was held at the Holy Family gymnasium on West Street on February 24. Participating in the first trial were Alexus Bell, Jonathan and Joshua Ford, Kierra Lumpkin, JaKayla Brown, Jonathan Mayfield, Cordarryl Faulkner, Jade McCullough and Devonte Smith. All shooters competed by age and gender. Those gaining trips to the state shootout were JaKayla Brown, Jonathan Mayfield, Cordarryl Faulkner, Jade McCullough and Devonte Smith. Entering the state competition on March 10 were Brown, Faulkner and Mayfield. Brown and Mayfield grabbed first-place trophies. Making the trip to provide fan support for Faulkner were his parents, Karee Heath and Ivory Faulkner. Landry Hearn (great-grandmother), Harriet Hearn (grandmother) and Tennys and Isaac Mayfield (parents) were there to cheer Mayfield on. Joyce Brown (grandmother), Danita Brown (mother), John Ford (uncle) and JaBarri Brown (brother) were there for Brown, who hit 21 of 25 attempts to take first in her category. Mayfield hit 19 of 25 in his category. Both winners’ scores have been forwarded to Connecticut for the national competition. It has been over a decade since Holly Springs has had a winner at the state level. Claude L. Vinson Sr., grand knight of the local council and tournament director, said, “We are very proud of these kids, and their parents and grandparents for lending their support and encouragement. We also appreciate the staff at Holy Family for making their facility available for this annual competition.” Report News:
