Local News BriefsTwo qualify in Potts Camp; deadline set for March 29 Two people, Sabrina Porter and James “Johnny” Westmoreland, have already signed up to run for a vacant alderman position in Potts Camp. Qualifying for the at-large position continues until 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 29. Candidates can sign up at town hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. A special election is set for Tuesday, April 17, in the Town of Potts Camp to fill a seat on the board of aldermen. Alderman Al Beard died February 24, almost halfway through his four-year term and leaving a vacancy on the five-member board. Voting on April 17 will take place at town hall. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The term will run through June 2009. For additional information on the election, contact the Potts Camp Town Hall, 662-333-7285, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Habitat taking applications March 22 in Byhalia On Thursday, March 22, Marshall County Habitat for Humanity will be taking applications for those wishing to qualify for a home. First Presbyterian Church, 2532 Church St., in Byhalia is the location; time is 6 p.m. From the stoplight at Hwy. 178 (old 78) and Byhalia Road turn left, go to the first stop sign, which is Church St., and turn right. The church is a block along on Church St. Applicants should bring with them their most recent pay stub, as proof of income. Appreciation ceremony set for April 21 at VFW Post A veterans’ and Mississippi National Guard 155th Brigade appreciation day ceremony is set for Saturday, April 21, at the VFW in Holly Springs. The event is sponsored by the Collins/Hurdle Post 5697 and the Clydesdale Christmas Store. Barbecue plates prepared by Rep. Tommy Woods and Sen. Ralph Doxey will be served free to veterans and their families and also sold to the public. The day will include music, entertainment and announcements of special awards to local veterans. A representative with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s office, Sen. Charlie Ross, Sen. Ralph Doxey, Rep. Tommy Woods along with and a few VFW dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremonies, according to Bill Janssen, post commander. Any proceeds, after expenses have been paid, will go to support local VFW charities. The doors open at 2 p.m. and festivities will conclude around 6 p.m. The public is invited to participate.
