MA starts 5-1 on diamond By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall Academy baseball team is off to a 5-1 start, the latest two victories being over Kirk Academy. Coach Jimmy Hicks’ Patriots traveled to Grenada Thursday and carried the hot bats with them. They pounded 18 hits in a 14-3 win over the Raiders in five innings. Seth Milliorn and Hunter Bolden had four hits each. Milliorn drove in four runs and Bolden three, while Bolden also had three stolen bases. Chase Samples added three hits and three runs-batted-in. Getting two hits each were Tyler Childers and Justin Gray. Adding one hit each were Tyler Sanders, Jimmy Palmer and Bo Bonds. Will Patton was the winner from the mound, improved his early season mark to 3-0. He threw four innings, while Bolden hurled one inning in relief. Just two days earlier the Patriots proved rude hosts to the same Kirk squad. MA collected 12 hits in an 11-6 win over the Raiders on Tuesday, March 6. Four Marshall players – Bolden, Samples, Milliorn and Bonds – had two hits each. Adding one hit apiece were Childers, Sanders, Gray and Palmer. Shane Campbell pitched the first three innings and earned the win. Palmer tossed three innings of relief and Milliorn one. MA built a lead before Kirk cut it to 7-6. The Patriots then pulled away for the five-run victory. Earlier season victories for Marshall included a sweep of Fayette Academy - 5-4 and 9-8. Jake Howell threw all seven innings to earn the mound victory in the 5-4 game. Gray drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Samples connected for two hits to lead a seven-hit attack. Adding one hit each were Stevie Brigance, Gray, Campbell, Howell and Wesley Harris. Patton got the win in relief in the 9-8 win over Fayette. Campbell and Palmer threw in relief with Palmer recording the save. Sanders had two hits. Bolden was one of two with a double and two big RBIs. Also getting one hit each were Gray, Bonds and Palmer. “It was two good wins over my alma mater,” Hicks said. “Fayette has a good ball team.” The Patriots’ other early-season victory, 8-1, came at home over West Memphis. Patton pitched four innings to earn the mound win. Campbell threw three innings in relief. Childers was two of two from the batter’s box with two RBIs. He also stole two bases. Harris also had two hits. Bonds had one hit and two RBIs. Brigance also added a hit. Marshall’s lone loss in the first six games came against North Delta – 6-4. “We were up 4-0 and didn’t finish the deal,” Coach Hicks said. Howell slapped two hits. Jake Omedeo added a hit and two RBIs. Getting one hit each were Samples and Harris. Campbell took the loss from the mound. Schedule Marshall competed in the Delta Tournament Monday and Tuesday of this week, facing Marvell and Tunica Monday and Strider Tuesday. The Patriots host a tournament Thursday. The schedule includes University Christian vs. Kirk at 1 p.m., University Christian vs. Marshall at 3 p.m., Benton Academy vs. Kirk at 5 p.m. and Marshall vs. Benton at 7 p.m. Marshall hosts Tupelo Christian Saturday, March 17, at 4 p.m. and then hosts Bishop Byrne next Tuesday, March 20, at 6 p.m. Report News:
